Ngati Porou is the second largest iwi in Aotearoa, and our people can be found living on the Coast and in major metropolitan cities in New Zealand, and across the world.

Our region
- Our traditional tribal boundary extends across the Eastern Seaboard of the North Island - from Potikirua in the north to Te Toka a Taiau in the south.
- 200 km of State Highway 35, a major transport route for the East Coast region, runs throughout our rohe.
- We have an abundance of pristine, natural assets- coastal beaches, rivers, mountains, forests and land estates, that have been largely untouched by industrialisation.
- Our communities are tight knit, and are centred around the 48 marae, and 58 hapu groupings within our area.
Our people
71,052 people identified as Ngati Porou in the 2013 census. Of these:
- 16.9% live in Gisborne/East Coast region. We also make up 61% (11, 985) of the total Maori population (19,683) who reside in this region.
- 18.5% of our people also live in Auckland, and 15.7% live in Wellington
- 48.9% of the total Ngati Porou population live elsewhere in New Zealand. In addition it has been estimated that 30,000 of our people live overseas, predominantly in Australia.
- 46.6 % (33,123 people) were male and 53.4 percent (37,926 people) were female.
- 26.6 % could hold a conversation about everyday things in te reo Maori.
- 34.8 % were under the age of 15 years, 25.7 % (18,240 people) were aged 15–29 years, 35.0 % aged 30–64 years and 4.5 % were aged 65 years and over.
