Marae Grants

The Marae Grant Fund is Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou commitment to respond to the aspirations of whanau hapu with respect to marae. The marae grants were established by the TRONPnui Board in October 2012.

Toitu Ngati Porou Charitable Trust was established in June 2013 and is one of two main subsidiaries of Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou (TRONPnui). Toitu is a wealth or benefit distribution entity to ensure that the Cultural Development Activities serve the needs of Ngati Porou now and in the future. Toitu Ngati Porou Board are responsible for marae grants distribution.

What grants are available?

There are two grants that eligible marae may apply for:

  1. Annual Marae Grant
    $20,000 per annum or $100,000.00 over 5 years. (Period covered is 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2017.)

Eligible Marae may apply for more than $20,000.00 annually if:

  • They have postponed previous years allocations and so are eligible for a larger grant or
  • Other Marae have formally confirmed that they will postpone their current year allocation (in return they receive the applicant Maraes allocation the following year/s.) This would require collaboration between Marae to co-ordinate plans and synchronise implementation of respective projects

2. Marae Capital Grant
A one off grant of up to $10,000.00 per Marae engaged in capital works projects including exterior whakairo, tukutuku, kowhaiwhai restoration work and capital expenditure. Grants will be restricted to ten marae per annum (or more if cash flow permits.)

Who is eligible to apply?

To be eligible for a Marae grant, the applicant Marae must:

  • Be listed on the Marae Schedule (Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou Trust Deed 2010)
  • Be a “functioning” Marae (refer to Functioning Marae Criteria)
  • Present a copy of their latest annual accounts with their application

Functioning Marae Criteria

Functioning Marae are those which are currently used by whanau/hapu for:

  • Ritual/Ceremonial functions: tangihanga, kawe mate, hura pohatu,
  • Religious functions: karakia/church services, religious gatherings/hui
  • Cultural functions: wananga, cultural activities
  • Festive functions: weddings, birthdays, acknowledgements
  • Sports functions: hosting sports teams, sports wananga & activities
  • Education functions: wananga, marae stays, cultural schools, Youth Justice
  • Hosting functions: Manaaki Manuhiri, Aroha ki te Manuhiri, Whakatau Manuhiri, Poroporoaki Manuhiri
  • Whanau/Hapu/Iwi functions: Political issues, Relationship Issues, Mana Issues, Decision making Forum

What can funds be used for?

Toitu Ngati Porou is a charitable Trust. This means that any grants it makes, including the Marae Grants, must only be used for charitable purposes.

A Marae has a charitable purpose if the physical structure of the Marae is located on a Maori reservation under Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993 and the Marae funds are used only for:

  • the administration and maintenance of the land and physical structure of the Marae; or
  • a purpose that is otherwise charitable; ie, the relief of poverty, the advancement of education, or other matters beneficial to the community.

How and when do we apply?

Quarterly application dates are scheduled each year:

  • Close 20th September – Payment date 20th October
  • Close 20th December – Payment date 20th January
  • Close 20th March – Payment date 20th April
  • Close 20th June – Payment date 20th July
