Ngā Maunga Kōrero is a collection of stories published in the Gisborne Herald about the many Maunga Rangatira (Important Mountains) of Ngāti Porou.
This is an amazing resource led by Walton Walker who was Head of the School of Humanities at Tairawhiti Polytechnic (now EIT). Walton worked with many experts and kaumātua to bring the information together.
It gives the history of many of our maunga and other important landmarks along with information such as pepeha, names and local history connected to that place. The aim of the series is to maintain and pass on knowledge of our past to our rangatahi, our future.
Ngā Maunga Kōrero also includes whakapapa and links relating to other iwi including Te Whānau-ā-Apanui and Ngāti Kahungunu.
Ngā Maunga Kōrero contains many Ngāti Porou taonga, so get busy reading!
One of the highlights of Ngā Maunga Kōrero is the collection of hapū pepeha (sayings or mottos) that connect the place and its history. You may well know:
Ko Hikurangi te maunga
Ko Waiapu te awa
Ko Ngāti Porou te iwi
But every area has its own sayings that come from the experience of the people there.
